Voted among the top ten best English gardens to visit, Scotney Castle is a wonderful place to go if you're into history or just want to enjoy some beautiful scenery. It is located just 50miles from London - and a few miles away from Tunbridge Wells.

Scotney Castle is the place to go if you love history, castles, parks, greenery, and hiking. There are actually two houses in Scotney – at the top of the hill is the new house, which was designed by Anthony Salvin using an Elizabethan style and was built in 1837 for Edward Hussey III, who took the ‘Picturesque’ style as his inspiration. At the bottom of the valley are the romantic ruins of a medieval castle and moat. The estate is open all year round, and offers a variety of beautiful scenery through the lovely parkland, woodland and farmland.

It doesn’t matter whether you choose to drop by in the summer or winter as there are plenty of things to do in Scotney Castle; ticket price for the gardens only is £9 while access to the garden+castle is £14. We only went around the gardens, but it was more than enough. The estate is so huge – 315-hectare (780-acre) estate, with woodland and parkland. And, you can still visit the ruins of the 1st castle, which is placed on a little island in the middle of the lake providing amazing reflections for your photographs.

The castle grounds have even played host to Shakespeare productions like A Midsummer Night’s Dream, with the actors appearing from behind the bushes on cue.
