Winter is a great time to remember summer, is it not? What is it about this annual exhibition that inspires my love/hate relationship with crowds and cotton candy? If you're a bit confused on what I'm talking about, here's a look at Capital Ex - an annual festival that we get to enjoy - or not, every July.

Capital Ex comes to a massive parking lot not far from my house. Jammed between a horse race track and the freeway, this annual 10-day festival transforms a series of parking lots into a carnival filled with sights, sounds, and smells. On some years we even left town to avoid the noise and traffic, but whenever we’re here, we try to make the most of it.
Admission is expensive, the sweet smells eventually make my stomach turn, and I instinctively remember the soles of my shoes sticking to the asphalt, but no matter how much I say I can’t stand it, it’s always a blast to spend a whole day there with the family until I have to walk home with a child asleep on my back.

Somewhere between the burnt coffee in a styrofoam cup and the ballsy bikers telling us “Don’t try this at home”, I’m stumped trying to put my finger on exactly draws me back to this place, so I just made a list:

awkward teenagers
money sucking games and rides
bright lights
giant jellybeans
PEZ dispenser collections
gumball machines
stunting bicycles
busty serving wenches
funhouse ripoffs
revolving views
lurching rides
childlike wonder
long white trailers
“Can I go again dad?”
grocery raffles
flying motorcycles
stunned crowds
expensive thrills
more stunt bikes
“Just one more time dad?”
nostalgic memories
bug rides
deep fried dough coated in sugar
food on a stick
drops of doom
oversized chickens
miniature tractors
cold drinks for the price of a week’s groceries
creaking metal
screaming children

What’s not to love?
