If you are traveling to Indonesia, maybe you can already name a lot of places with different interesting features. But if you happen to be just visiting for a short while in Jakarta (the capital city of Indonesia), and you would like to experience a quick getaway from the busy city - to swim or dive, and see the wonderful marine life, keep reading.
Jakarta is a bay city. Up north, there’s a seaside park called Taman Impian Jaya Ancol or Ancol for short. It has a theme park, dolphin attraction, cottages, hotels, sea world, seafood, marina etc. although this is not where I went. Hop on a boat for an hour more (or two and a half hours if you’re on a tight budget) and you will reach The Thousand Island Marine National Park.
Consisting of small islands and shallow clear waters, this national park has populated islands, private islands, marine resort islands, and deserted islands. Take your pick for island hopping whether you’re on a budget trip, a luxurious one, or an adventurous island hopping adventure. Snorkeling, diving, and canoeing are some of the water-related activities that you can do here. Meanwhile, visiting a mangroves plantation, hawksbill sea turtles hatchery, milk fish farm, and tropical marine fish sellers are the other things that you can do if you do not want to get wet.
The underwater world is quite a scene, just by snorkeling, you get to see schools of fishes, different types of colorful corals, starfishes, sea lilies, sea urchins (be careful), and if you’re lucky, sea turtles and dolphins. Go diving and you will experience and encounter different types of coral reefs and sea organisms – from nudibranches to sea fans, school of juvenile barracudas and more.
The inhabitants of the island are quite friendly, their occupations are either fishermen, coral transplantation workers, and tour guides for snorkeling and diving (with their dive shops). Bikinis are still quite a rare view in the inhabited island, because of the culture but on the resorts and deserted island, feel free to don your favorite bikini.
The Thousand Islands or “Kepulauan Seribu” is my favorite place for a quickie vacation – budget and distance wise, since I live in Jakarta. It also satisfies my shutter-happy finger, whether it be underwater or above. Just have a look at some of the pictures that I took. Cheers!
