Johannesburg: In and Around Newtown

Johannesburg is full of culture, people, old buildings, renovated buildings making it a place where there's so much to see and explore. Here's a look at the different buildings in our city - old and new. Giant artworks are usually displayed on the city buildings; the amazing graffiti livens up our streets and make you want to turn to each corner to see what's around it.

I have been experimenting with Lomography for quite some time now and I’m currently on a mission to complete my architecture portfolio with some interesting travel images. This is why I decided to photograph my own “home city”. My boyfriend and I decided to spend an afternoon out and about in our city to capture all the hustle and bustle that makes it interesting.

We jumped in the car and started snapping away as we crossed over the Nelson Mandela Bridge. The bridge runs over around 30-40 railway tracks. It connects the suburb of Braamfontein to the beauty that is Newtown. As you cross over you can see an old train station to your right – a place that we encountered on our first day of exploring. We parked our car and took a stroll towards the structure and snapped away. There are so many of these hidden treasures within the streets of the city that are just waiting to be found. We then went on auto pilot and went wherever the car felt like going – with no specific destination in mind. We followed the graffiti and art trails and stopped whenever we felt inspired to explore certain areas a bit more.

After an afternoon of exploring and as the sun was going down, we headed out to meet some friends for “sundowners” and microwave popcorn at the top of one of the newly-renovated buildings in Braamfontein. This overlooked all the paths we had journeyed along that day and all the ones we are still yet to conquer. For me, Johannesburg is one of the most beautiful cities in the world – both for its buildings and its people. Come and pay us a visit in the “City of Gold”.
