The Final Destination

The historical railway station located at Tanjong Pagar, Singapore is owned by Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB), the main railway operator of Malaysia. The station building was completed in 1932 with a spacious Waiting Hall with a dome roof. However, after so many years, it will soon be relocated to the Woodlands Train Checkpoint which will become operational in July 2011.

The facade of this grand looking building shows four reliefs of white marble, allegories of Agriculture, Industry, Commerce and Transport. Inside the main waiting hall, there are panels with typical Malayan scenes such as rice planting, rubber tapping, shipping activities, bullock cart transport, copra growing and tin mining.

As the railway station is still owned by KTMB, one can feel the distinct “Malaysian flavor” when one is inside the premises, due to the Berhasa Melayu signages to the setting of the sarabat stalls. One can seem to be instantly transported 50-60 kilometers north into our neighbouring country.

Tanjong Pagar railway station is also the final destination of the Eastern and Oriental Express originating from Hua Lamphong, Bangkok. The 3 days 2 nights journey will stop at Kuala Lumpur Sentral, Butterworth, and Kanchanaburi.

On 24 May 2010, both Singapore and Malaysia agreed to relocate KTMB out of Tanjong Pagar railway station and establish a station at the Woodlands Train Checkpoint (WTCP), making it the southern terminus of the Malaysian rail network by 1 July 2011. The whole area will be redeveloped but the main station building will be preserved due to its historical significance.

Therefore, if you intend to visit this location, you have to be quick as time is running out!
