Paris catacombs touristic visits takes place in Denfert Rochereau. A nice occasion to shoot tons of skulls, bones in a very theatrical style! Paris catacombs are a must see in Paris underground! You might wait up to an hour to get your ticket inside, but it's definitely worth it.
The French capital is digged from everywhere for centuries, with hundreds of kilometers of galleries. But only this part is officially opened to visits.
At the end of the XVIIIth century the cemetary of les Halles in the center of Paris got full and increasingly insane. Decisions were made to move bones to this off-centered quarries. Then during about 30 years, all Parisian bones from all cemeteries got moved there.
The visit begins by climbing down hundreds of steps. Then a long straight corridor (which sounds weird in a city like Paris!) leads you to the real entry. There a big entrance door waits for you, with this mention: “Stop! Here begins the empire of death” and from here you will see hundreds of thousands of bones meticulously oredered together in a dozen of rooms.
Let’s be clear, the guys who created this place definitely wanted to give it a theatrical sense, it is a show just by the way every room have been ordered, how the few sculptures have been placed and enlighted.
It’s kind of dark in there, with few lights, but that’s what makes it intense! Cameras are forbidden in there but I guess a little analog camera without flash and a small tripod don’t hurt anyone right?
I’ve always liked long exposures shots, fine by me. Equiped with Provia 400X and Elitechrome EBX slides I was however very unsure of the results I’d get… I was not disapointed, and even got two or three accidental but very nice doubles.
Next time I try the unofficial galleries!
