The Old City of Saint Louis, Senegal

The old city of Saint Louis, Senegal, also called Ndar in Wolof, is my favorite place in Senegal. Saint Louis City is located in the Northwest of the country, near the mouth of the Senegal River, and about 300 kms north to Dakar.

Saint Louis was the capital of French Western Africa from 1895 to 1902. It is thus the oldest French town in Africa.

You can divide the city of Saint Louis into 3 parts :

  • the new town
  • the old town
  • the fishermen district, named The Langue de Barbarie, which is situated in a long stretch of sand which separates the Senegal river from the Atlantic Ocean.

Saint Louis is famous for its culture. The most important jazz festival in Africa takes place in Saint Louis in May. I loved to wander into the streets of Saint Louis, taking pics with my faithful Holga. Here, time seems to have stopped. The atmosphere is very nostalgic, because of the faded elegance of fine houses decked with carved wood balconies and verandas.

People live in the streets : children play football, Ancients drink tea, goats are wandering… I visited Saint Louis in February, during the dry season. Disdis went there in summer, during the wet season: have a look to his pics, the atmosphere is quite different !
