The Red Island, Croatia

One day my boss told me "Read about this interesting congress" and I, instead of answering "About what?" told "Where, where?". I love traveling and am game for anything so "why not?".

Exactly, the congress topic was quite interesting but the coolest thing was the location: Croatia!! Many people had been telling me in the last years how beautiful and calm is Croatina, its amazing beaches… and finally I was going to see it personally!

The Red Island (or Crveni Otok in croatian) is located in the region of Istria, northern Croatia, and to get there we needed to take a ferry from Rovinj, a beautiful village in the coast. The island itself just has a four-star hotel thet, in summer, must be full of tourists and offers many activities. For us, as we travelled there in may, the weather was not good (I even took with me the underwater case for my fisheye if we could go swimming, but we weren’t lucky) and we found an almost empty hotel. Even though we could enjoy the surroundings of the hotel, the clear waters, the trees… including some seagull that scared us a bit, they have conquered half the island!!

In our free afternoon we took the ferry to visit Rovinj, a village that is worthy for getting lost. The tour started in Rovinj’s highest spot, Saint Eufemia’s church, from where we could observe the Mediterraean sea and the many croatian islands. Then we started our walk down to the village center, trough its narrow streets, choosing the busy ones, full of souvenir shops and handcraft workshops because in Rovinj, that in the past was an artist’s refuge, in august it’s arranged a painting festival. As usual, what I recommend is choosing a side alley or following some native lady to discover curious spots: houses full of plants, colourful curtains, clothes hanging from one side of the street to the other…

To sum up my first trip to Croatia I’ll just say: it’s totally worthy and I came back home wanting to know the rest of the country!!
