The time seemed right to head north to the island of the vikings, geysirs and especially the Eyjafjallajökull!
Said so, done so, we boarded the plane, rented a 4×4 and hit the roads…

Iceland is wet and wild, we were eager to see all the waterfalls, geysirs, seabirds, whales, volcanos – oh yes, the volcanos. On one hand it was rather useful that the Eyjafjallajökull was erupting no more (no flights – no vacation, right?), on the other hand we’d have liked to see the magma, the smoke and the ashcloud. The volcano itself couldn’t even be seen as it was covered in clouds as hot steam was still pouring out of the crater.

The people of Iceland are used to earthquakes and volcanos, so all the devastation the eruption brought in spring is hardly visible any more. Roads were rebuilt, houses cleaned and where all the ash and mud came down there are now green meadows as the volcanic ash is very fertile.

After a short moment of disappointment we thought, so what, and enjoyed the rest of Iceland in a one week trip.
Some of the most beautiful impressions are in the album.
Just one last tip for Iceland: If you are lazy like us and you are not on a tight budget, rent the most tricked out 4×4 you can get! You can go just everywhere with a Landrover on monster wheels. Big boys, big toys my wife would say…
