Pinkpop Festival, The Netherlands

Pinkpop is a yearly, three-day festival in Landgraaf, The Netherlands. For years it is in the weekend of Pinksteren (dutch for pentecost). In 2009 was the 40 year anniversery of the festival with artist like Bruce Springsteen, Placebo, Depeche Mode and a lot more.

For years I sat in front of the television watching Pinkpop. And always I was jealous at the people who where there, because I wasn’t. So every year I told myself to go the next year. But for the one reason or another, I never really got there. Until this year. Last May was my first Pinkpop. With artists like Rammstein, Pink, The gossip, Florence and the machine, Greenday, The editors and a lot more. It is a festival with a lot of international artists. With a lot of great shows. It almost looked like a competition who had the biggest show, or the most fireworks. But I don’t know who won.

The festival is named Pinkpop, because of the populair music and because the festival has almost always been at the pentecost weekend, and the ducht word for pentecost is pinksteren. The logo of Pinkpop is a pink doll; pink because of the name of the festival, and pop is dutch for doll.

Nowadays, there are about 60.000 people a day coming to Pinkpop. And because the festival takes three days, there are four campsites. Camping A is the closest and Camp D is the farrest from the festival terrain. But if you are with a lot of people and you want to have a spot together as close as possible to the festival terrain, you have to be there early, very early. Like 4 o’clock in the morning, while the camp is official opening at 12 o’clock.

Pinkpop is the only yearly festival in the world that exists for so long, and there have been 541 unique artists preforming at pinkpop. Since 2007 there is also ‘Pinkpop Classic’, a festival for one day, with acts that have ever preformed at Pinkpop.

The next Pinkpop is at 11, 12 and 13 july 2011. If you’re planning to go, here are a few tips:

  • If you want to stay at camp A, or B, please remember to come very eary!
  • It’s not allowed to bring your own food at the festival terrain.
  • You can’t bring a proffesional camera to the festival terrain ( but you won’t anyway, because we have lomo camera’s, and luckyly, they are allowed!)
  • For detailed information, visit the official pinkpop site!

Pinkpop is the oldest and best-known festival of the Netherlands, hope to see you there next year!
