Last year, my fiance and I took a trip to the coast of Croatia. We went in part because we wanted to share a trip with our Lomographer friends, and also because it was summer! So may I introduce you to the Mediterranean land from a bygone era!

Croatia is a country that offers different types of tourism opportunities, monuments, beaches, and mountains. Want to know what we decided to do? ROAD TRIP! We crossed the country from end to end so we could sample a little of everything. The mood of our trip was established by our mode of transportation, the car. So we stayed in a type of hostel called Sobes by Croatians.

Sobes are are individually rented rooms inside small houses or on residential properties. Sobes are government regulated, so they are clean, safe, and pretty cheap. The best thing about Sobes is that you’ll find them everywhere, crossing through towns and cities, which is pretty perfect if you’re on a road trip!

Staying in Sobes provides all the flexibility needed on a trip like ours. Forget hotels, you’d have to know the area like the back of your hand. Passing along without knowing where you’’ll stay the night, it gives a touch of uncertainty to the trip. Priceless!

This was our route:

  1. Pula – Premantura (incredible beach coast).
  2. Premantura – It polishes – Town of Opatija (old aristocratic town)
  3. Opatija – Natural Park of Plitvitze (impressive Lakes)
  4. Plitvitze – City of Zadar – national Park Kornati. (Islands)
  5. Zadar – City of Zibenik (our favorite) – Isla Privtluca (sun and sea)
  6. Sibenik – City of Split – Island of Brac – beach of Bowl (better impossible)
  7. Brac – Mljet (island, is not of playera, is but of long walks, relax, to take a walk in boat)
  8. Mljet – Dubrovnik (monumental City) – Madrid.

I’ll leave you with some tips.

  • I rented a car in Croatia, but I put in a reservation from Spain.
  • Stay in Sobes, they’re great and they come in apartment style, which comes in handy if you are in a group.
  • Use the coastal route, it’s prettier. When you need to save time, travel by train. They are almost always new and in great shape. There is a toll, but it’s super super cheap.
  • It’s not necessary to buy tickets for the ferry from Spain. They’re always empty. We did take our trip in the first two weeks of September though.
  • Take plastic slippers or pool shoes. The beaches of Croatia are not for walking barefoot.
  • Our favorite place we visited was Sibenik. I’m giving you guys the number of the Sobe where we stayed. Perhaps if you have Lomo-luck it will be available when you go. I promise you, they’ll be happy to have you. Mrs. Boxena

  • If you take a lot of film, don’t be too lazy to get them developed.

Without a doubt, Croatia is a place full of enchantment, amusement, and a location which anyone can adjust to. Lomographically speaking, it’s ideal!

Here are the photos I took on our trip! We hope we’ve motivated you to get to know Croatia! The mediterranean land from a bygone era!
