Sheung Wan - The Hidden Treasure

Sheung Wan might not be highlighted in many guide books, but if you are looking to experience something closer to the daily life of Chinese culture, all you have to do it to head further west to Des Voeux Road West – home of hundreds of dried seafood stores.

Sheung Wan might not be highlighted in many guide books, and if it does,
it’s most likely because of Man Mo Temple or Western Market – both are
interesting although a little touristy. But if you are looking to
experience something closer to the daily life of Chinese culture, all
you have to do it to head further west to Des Voeux Road West – home of
hundreds of dried seafood stores.

Five to ten minutes walk along the tram rail, from the Sheung Wan MTR station towards Sai
Ying Pun, you will see local life where restaurants and housewives come
to shop for dried shrimps, expensive shark’s fins, preserved sausages
and delicatessen such as dried sea-horses and deer penises.

One of the old-fashion industries, many shops on the street are sticking
to their old ways of doing business; not only won’t you see many desktop
computers, but many are still using abacuses rather than calculators.

If you’re interested in seeing some real actions and interacting with
locals, rather than burying your nose in some guide books that tell you
all about the place on paper, then this is the street for you.

Needless to say, Sheung Wan is also an ideal place for photographers.
