Dot To Dot Music Festival

The Dot To Dot festival reappeared once more in Nottingham on May bank holiday weekend, with a spring in it's step, a glint in it's eye and an insistence that nobody was going home until Zane Lowe had said nighty night and turned off his record player.

That cheeky bank holiday energy was very evident, as was the tinge of sunburn and sense of excited anticipation at what the day would bring. The party is spread over 8 rooms in 5 different interconnecting labyrinthian venues, all a mere 2 minute shimmy apart with a head spinningly diverse line-up. Thats the beauty of this festival, its nomadic nature and eclectic mix of music means that If what’s going off in front of you isn’t quite your cup of tea, just go and find a more suitable alternative upstairs, downstairs or out the back in the courtyard.

Thankfully the mobile phone companies haven’t got there grubby mits on this yet, so the corporate sponsorship was discrete with just a smidgen of Fred Perry at the edges, but plenty of retro girls ‘n’ boys sporting the buttoned up polo shirt and looking dapper were in attendance. Maybe it’s Nottingham’s fashion heritage (Paul Smith anyone?) that inspires the sartorial effort of the crowd, with the streets awash with snazzy students, fashionistas, and vintage lookers milling about keen to be seen.

I’d got hold of a press pass, so wandered into the packed photo pit in front of the main stage to be met by 12 very serious looking togs all wielding huge digi bodies and expensive glass, utterly bemused at my silly little clockwork russian toy. When Blood Red Shoes hit the stage singer/drummer Steven Ansell peered down at us asking ‘is this a music festival or a photography festival’? Many many cameras in attendance, but sadly not enough of a Lomo presence, so if this spinning top of an event arrives in your neck of the woods, you know what to do.
