Vigan City: A Gem of the Past

Talk about old school: VIgan City, a World Heritage Site, is one of the remaining Hispanic towns in the Philippines, and is well-known for its "cobblestone streets, and a unique architecture that fuses Philippine building design, and construction with colonial European architecture" (Wiki). Located at the west tip of Ilocos Sur, the city offers a wide range of things to do, foods to eat, and attractions to see (or take pictures of!).

Though the original settlers were Chinese traders, the city of Vigan is now famous because of what the Spanish colonizers have left there: the European architecture. Most houses you’ll find there are from the colonial period and have been refurbished and maintained through out the years. Walking the streets of Vigan transports you back to 1650s, giving tourists an idea of how the Filipinos lived, long before our time. A vast plaza in the middle of the city is closed off from traffic during weekends, and is flocked by people looking for some delicious street food, good music, and and a place to relax and unwind .A lot of antique and wooden furniture stores can also be found near the main plaza for those looking for souvenirs to take home with them.

Notable things to do when visiting Vigan:
*Take a ‘kalesa’/horse-drawn carriage ride around the city. There are lots of them in the plaza and it’s the best way to see all the beautiful places.
*Try their ‘okoy’/shrimp pancakes, Vigan Empanada and bibingka. Trust me, there’s no shortage of delicious food in this city.
*Visit the Baluarte, an animal sanctuary/zoo that hosts a wide array of animals.
*Take the Vigan Heritage River Cruise.
*Visit the old churches around the place if you’re looking for awesome lomo subjects.
*Shoot some B&W film! (“Like I did”:http://www.lomography.com/homes/blackcoffeeandtantrum/albums/1617100-vigan-in-bw ) You can’t get as vintage as that, in a place like Vigan.
