The Grace of Miradouro da Graça (Lisboa, Portugal)

Miradouro da Graça is a popular sightseeing place in Lisbon both for tourists and locals, where you can lay back and enjoy the sun and the views. Miradouro da Graça is a rather well know sightseeing point in Lisbon, frequented by both locals and tourists.

You can find a seat around the small cafe (where you can have something to eat or drink) and lay back and enjoy the pleasant view over the city. Although being in the center of Lisbon, it’s a very calm and relaxing place, full of good-vibes =) Recently it was been (posthumous) dedicated to a famous Portuguese poetess, Sophia de Mello Breyner and a poem of her authorship about Lisbon can be found on a wall on the left.

Behind the cafe stands an ancient monastery, founded in 1271, and its church, that you can visit. It is a national monument and it was founded in the place where the first king of Portugal camped with his troops during the famous siege of the city, in the distant year of 1147. According to the legend, the name Graça comes from a statue of Nossa Senhora da Graça, which appeared in the fishing net of the fishermen in nearby Cascais. In the following day they delivered her image to the monastery, which became named after her. Another legend says that the same image announced the victory of the Portuguese army in the Aljubarrota battle in 1385, which is one of the most famous battles in Portugal.

A great way to get there, is to hop on the famous tourist tram “28”, that takes you around mystic old Lisbon. Between the sightseeing, the cafe and the church, you’ll have a very relaxing time. This is for sure an obligatory stop to anyone visiting Lisbon!
