Prospect Park: A Different Playground

No see-saws and jungle gyms here. Located in Redlands, California, this botanical garden boasts rows and rows of orange trees and Victorian-style buildings.

Nowadays when I hear the word “park,” I’m reminded of a flat, fenced-in rectangle covered in urine-speckled grass with a few metal benches and maybe even a sandy playground (that is TEEMING with bacteria, by the way). It’s no wonder that when I talk about Prospect Park and invite friends to go there I get blank stares, slow nods and wrinkly noses. Yes, I know you’re a grown-up, and no it’s not LAME.

Prospect park is located in the city of Redlands, California. The land was part of the Kimberly Crest, a three-storey french-style chateau, and was built in 1897. Later on it was donated to the city and became a botanical garden. Back in its heyday, the city was the vacation spot for old Hollywood and frequented by a few US Presidents including Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt. The park contains citrus trees that date back to those times. There are also fig and pomegranate trees, wild strawberries, plenty of blackberry bushes, ginko biloba (i remember seeing it haha), lavender and rosemary. Roses, irises, honeysuckle, jasmine and flowering trees are scattered all throughout. There’s a bamboo hedge leading to the outdoor theatre… look for a break in the bamboo and go inside.

There aren’t many places like this in my part of Southern California. I am lucky I live only a few minutes away. Although I’ve been there many times, I always find interesting spots and details that I missed last time. I’ve shot a piggy-winning photo here before and was really pleasantly surprised. Maybe it’s not so hard to take beautiful pictures of a very vintage-ly photogenic place.

Sweet gallery. This park looks like a sweet place to kill some time and take pics or read a book.
