Often referred to as The Rock, Alcatraz used to be the America’s prison with the highest level of security, since it it’s built upon an island in San Francisco Bay. The best-known inmates are of course Al Capone “Big Al” and Robert Stroud “The Birdman of Alcatraz”. “During its 29 years of operation, the penitentiary claimed no prisoners had ever successfully escaped. 36 prisoners were involved in 14 attempts, two men trying twice; 23 were caught, six were shot.” (according to Wikipedia). The most notably escape, however, was done by Frank Morris and the Anglin brothers who created dummy heads to trick the guards. Still, it is unknown whether they ever reached the land.
The prison was closed in 1963 and nowadays, it has become a must-see location for all tourists visiting San Francisco. Obviously, the island is quite small for such a huge load of tourists, but as soon as you enter the buildings and listen to the perfect audio tour, you feel as going back in time and you won’t care about anyone who might step on your feet. After your tour and after listening to thrilling stories, you will be really glad that you can leave this prison.
