The View From The Blue Line

I was at a conference for a few days near the O'Hare airport. Like a lot of large cities, Chicago's airport is quite a trip from downtown Chicago, and thrifty travelers know the best way from O'Hare to downtown is on the Blue Line.

I was at a conference for a few days near the O’Hare airport. Like a lot of large cities, Chicago’s airport is quite a trip from downtown Chicago, and thrifty travelers know the best way from O’Hare to downtown is on the Blue Line.

The Blue Line starts underground near the terminal, rises above ground over a few neighborhoods, and drops below ground again before hitting “the Loop” downtown. It’s one of only two lines in the Chicago Transit Authority that runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week – perfect for those red eye flights.

I hopped on with the business travelers and tourists, and made my way downtown to meet my wife at the Art Institute. People hopped off and on at the efficient stops. At one point, two hipster college students engaged in a fairly serious thumb war while trying to ignore the smells floating up from behind us.

There are two things that stay with me after riding the Blue from O’Hare to downtown Chicago and back. The sight of the homes and rooftops that seem to be right under the tracks; and the smell of urine from that old guy sitting in the corner. Seriously, I can still smell it once in a while…
