Golden Triangle (Thailand, Laos, Myanmar)

A short visit to the famous Golden Triangle has etched memorable imageries in my mind. It is the place where the borders of Thailand, Burma (Myanmar) and Laos converge.

A short visit to the famous Golden Triangle has etched memorable imageries in my mind. It is the place where the borders of Thailand, Burma (Myanmar) and Laos converge. Golden Triangle was once the center of all opium production and trade in the region. Today, it has become one of the most popular attractions in Chiang Rai, attracting thousands of tourists every year.

And that’s not surprising at all! There’s really something charming about the panoramic views over the confluence of the Mekong and Ruak Rivers to the triangular portion of Chiang Rai extending up between Myanmar in the west, and Laos in the east.

You can explore the area by riding a long tail boat from the Thai side which cruises up and down the Mekong River up to the small island named Don Sao in Laos. No visa is required to enter this territory. The boat trip takes about an hour.

Other attractions in Golden Triangle include a giant seated Buddha, elephant statues and elaborate Buddhist shrines on the riverbanks. There’s also a wide array of stalls selling Thai and Burmese souvenirs.
