Olkhon (Ольхон) is the largest island in Lake Baikal in eastern Siberia/Russia. The area is around 730 square kilometres.
Olkhon has a dramatic combination of terrain and features a combination of taiga, steppe and a small desert. The deep strait who separates the island from the land can be crossed with a small ferry.
The population of the island is around 1500 and consists mostly of Buryats. Most of the residents are farmers or fishermen. There are several settlements and five villages on the island, the village of Khuzhir is the administrative capital of Olkhon.
The Buryats believe the island is a spiritual place, and on the western coast, close to Khuzhir, is Baikal’s most famous landmark, the Shamanka, or Shaman’s Rock. Natives believe that Burkhan, a modern religious cult figure of the Altai peoples, lives in the cave in this rock. The rock is one of nine Asian Most Sacred Places.
I`ve been on Olkhon in summer 2009 for 6 days, and it`s one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen. After a 7 hour bus drive from Irkutsk you will find the absolutely breathtaking landscape of Olkhon.
