Winnipeg (Manitoba, Canada)

The ‘Peg’ as they call it. A very nice city in the longitudinal centre of Canada, where I enjoyed temperatures colder than in the Arctic. No kidding.

I went there for a conference about a scientific Arctic project I was part of. It was the occasion to see all the people I met during the expedition, and also to visit this cool city. I went there two years ago and almost suffered from frostbite. It was so cold that I could see my spit freeze on the ground!

When you approach the city by plane, all what you see is a flat and white landscape. It feels a bit like the middle of nowhere… But when you visit the city and meet people who live there, you totally change your opinion. People have the warmth in their heart that their land lacks.

The city is famous for the ‘forks’, and you should check Jeff’s location about this point where rivers meet.

The university of Manitoba is also very famous and hosts a little museum with fascinating dinosaur skeletons, including a giant turtle called Archelon, for ‘ruling turtle’.

Downtown Winnipeg is really nice. Nice old stone buildings, many wall paintings from the different native populations living there and an overall feeling of nice cultural mix.

So, my advice is to not listen to people saying ‘why the hell are you going to the Peg?’. It’s a very nice city to visit, and you won’t regret the trip!

Thank you for the kind words. I live in the 'Peg myself and while there's almost nothing of interest, no mountains, no sea, no forests, I think we have one of the most gorgeous horizon. As what my Architecture Prof calls it; "Where the sky began". Lovely pictures. :)
