Yan Kit Swimming Complex DIve In!

Nestled in the heart of the city, mere minutes away from the central business district, a relic from the past sit. From an age where black and white television was all the rage, Yan Kit swimming complex forms the micro-history of old Singapore. Dive in for more!

Built and opened in 1952, this half century old swimming complex shows its age. Only the second public swimming pool in Singapore, it saw almost 1000 people go through the turnstiles in its heyday. Sadly, as people moved away from the CBD and into the heartlands, less and less visitors came. In 1992, the Singapore Sports Council closed it down for good. Plans by several groups to refurbish and lease the pool did not come to fruition.

It is quite a task to get into the place considering the area is fortified by many padlocks and barb wire. However, the resourceful lomographer should find little problems gaining entry with a bit of patience and agility. The work to get in is worth it. The ancient murals(circa 1950s) and tacky colored tiles line the buildings and floor. The various buildings, while in disrepair, are surprisingly clean and tidy. The pool, emptied of their chlorinated contents, are a great place for pictures. How often do you get to running about in an empty swimming pool?!

The showpiece of the place has to be the diving platforms. 20meters up, one’s legs will become like jelly once the realization that there is no pool of water below to cushion the drop. The shot will be well worth the effort though. So don’t let your friend’s mockery get to you. You get to laugh at them when they are up there =)

Situated beside tall buildings and the all-new 50 storey Duxton Plain, it is truly a juxtaposition of Singapore’s past and present. So what are you waiting for?! Take a leap into an empty pool now!
