Aso-San Volcano Caldera, Japan

Mt. Aso is one of the largest volcanoes in the world and still active! A little bit dangerous, but overwhelmingly beautiful!

Mt. Aso is a huge volcano in Japan. It’s located in the center of the Kyūshū island and it’s the largest active volcano in Japan and one of the largest volcanoes in the world. And most of all: it’s one of the most impressive nature scenes I’ve ever seen, especially its breathtaking caldera! You will probably also be overwhelmed by the beauty of the surrounding landscape. It’ll make you feel like you’re walking on the moon!

I took the JR train to Aso, which is perfect for Japan Rail Pass users. Then you still have to take a bus to the cable car platform to see the crater of Mt. Naka. From there, you can take the cable car or climb to the summit. Make sure you check the safety announcements, because the last eruption was just in 2004! It’s possible you can’t visit some parts because of the toxic gas emissions. Don’t worry though if you shouldn’t be allowed to go upstairs at all … if you wait half an hour the wind might have turned and everything might be safe again! Once you’re upstairs, you can admire the caldera or walk to the peak Naka-Dake, which should be a hike of about half an hour.

If you go there, whatever you do, don’t even think of going to the Aso Volcanic museum, unless you like the 70’s museum style and outdated information. Seriously, it is the worst museum I’ve ever visited in my whole life. And fortunately, the nature is too beautiful to waste your time in a museum anyway!
