The Big Market of Kaolack, Sénégal

Kaolack is the hub of the road network that serves both the southern ans eastern parts of Senegal. The city itself is not a famous destination for tourists, but it's big covered market is a must see.

Kaolack (Kawlax in Wolof) is a town of about 180,000 people on the north bank of the Saloum River and the N1 road in Senegal, West Africa.

Kaolack is an important regional market town and is Senegal’s main peanut (groundnuts) trading and processing center : you can see the peanuts pyramids on my pics, they are really impressive !

It is also the hub of the road network that serves both the southern ans eastern parts of Senegal. There is not a lot to see or to do in Kaolack. The weather is too hot, the pollution is high and there’s almost nothing to see except the big market for the locals, one of the biggest covered markets in West Africa.

We visited the famous market : narrow covered streets, full with buyers and sellers of fruits and vegetables, food, meat, second hand clothes, equipment for the house, cellphones, bundles of sticks and herbs that supposedly cure fevers ans the common cold, barbecues made with car steel, electric fans from China, shoes, barbers and hairdressers : not very interesting things for tourists to buy, but its was very instructive !

I didn’t take so much pics, because here people don’t really appreciate to be photographed, and because it was a bit too dark to shoot with the Diana in the shade of the narrow streets. (and we were told by the guide to take a very few things with us, because the market is not that safe for « toubabs » (white people, strangers), so I took only one camera with me, and I thought the market will be sunny, but no.

Yeah i know this so well, you get so eager to a lot in places like this, but have to be careful standing there with your big shiny camera and your pale face. Very nice results though.
