The new extension of the library from the late 90s, nicknamed The Black Diamond, remains one of the most dominating features of the Copenhagen waterfront. It’s a big box, distorted so as to create irregular angles, and covered entirely in jet black granite. It’s at its best at sunset when the water reflects the granite and the granite reflects the water and the sky.
The Black Diamond is so attention grabbing you probably won’t even notice the older red brick building attached to it.

Inside, The Black Diamond is as modern as the outside. You enter into a rather dark and enclosed space with low ceilings. Passing by the cafe, the curved glass wall of the bookstore leads you into the open space of a huge atrium. looking out onto the waterfront.

In the atrium, big conveyor belts take you to the floors above which house the library functions, while stairs lead to the basement level and The National Museum of Photography.
It’s very easy to forget that you’re in a library. All the books are neatly tucked away, there’s no browsing through endless shelves, instead you must order the book of your desire online, and it will magically appear on a shelf by the check out counter or in one of the study halls.

Exploration pays off. Ducking behind a message board in the old building reveals a series of gloomy and deserted rooms stuffed with encyclopedias.
Taking the elevator to the top floors of the new building it’s possible to step out onto the runways that look down on the atrium. From here you get a full view of the waterfront, as well as the curvy walkways along the study halls, the conveyor belts and a view into the circular basement below.
For the Lomographer, this is a wonderland of interesting lines and shadows. It’s also great fun to try to capture different configurations of people on the conveyor belts below.
