Do you remember what you wanted to be when you grow up? I do, I wanted to be a jet pilot.
When I was a child I used to live near a military air base and my eyes were constantly scanning the clouds for jets. My first camera ever was a Micro 110 cartridge camera and I used to point it to the blue skies trying to photograph the aircrafts above, after developing, the aircrafts were just tiny dots in the photos…
I remember thinking: “one day it will be me flying one of those” but I couldn’t be more wrong, by the age of 18 I was placed in the army as an off-road driver, but that’s another story…
I hate war, violence and all the bad things associated to war, I am totally against it.
I wanted to be a fighter pilot just for the speed and adrenaline rush; it was my dream to fly higher and faster than birds, to fly through the clouds as if they were made out of cotton candy and I still have that dream.
I still love the look of military airplanes both old and new; I love the fact that the man can achieve such things with just screws and bolts, to fly at the edge of space at the speed of sound.
It is almost impossible for me to have a ride in one of those jet fighters but I am trying to have a go on one of the Red bull Air race airplanes and that is just good enough for me.
Monte Real Airbase is Located in Monte Real, Portugal. It was inaugurated in 1959; the first jets were F-6F Sabre, followed by Fiat G.91, T-3, T-8, A-7PCorsair 2 and the latest fighter is F-16 Fighting Falcon (1994 and 2003). You can see all this jets flying at the BA5 air show every year
You can only visit it once a year, on the Airbase birthday commemoration; you can see the aircrafts, helicopters, control tower; you can ride the tanks and other vehicles or you have your flight baptism on a Hercules, it is not a jet fighter but it is good enough for those who have only fly in commercial airplanes.
