Me and the Dogs in Bergen aan Zee

A dunes reserve on the beach - a beautiful spot to enjoy some Dutch nature.

I heard about this place from my business partner, who is very fond of nature and especially hiking in nature. I was looking for a place to go with my dogs, as it was a beautiful, sunny day, and after the morning coffee we realized there are no burning matters and decided to take the day off and enjoy the winter sun.
I went home, packed the Diana, the Polaroid 1000, a few rolls/packs of film and the dogs, into the Volvo, and off we go. After about an hour drive, with a little detour after losing the way, we arrived at the spot. On the way we passed through Bergen, which is a beautiful little town.
Now, a word about my dogs: they are two old ladies, about 13 of age, urban creatures.

Maya is of medium size and is already having difficulties walking. So she is just happy to be able to keep up… Does is a small dog, half poodle, full of energy, who is usually hyper-excited when we go to the park or somewhere on the outskirts of town. I think this time she was just overwhelmed by the natural nature of the place. she was very quite and kept close most of the time, looking in all directions, as if waiting for something to pop up from behind the next dune…

The reserve is indeed very quiet and apart from the trails and a few posts marking them, the place is quite clean of human traces. I guess in summer this might be a bit different – probably many more people walk around when the weather is good.

The dunes are mostly covered with vegetation and the are also some wooded spots. From afar you can see some buildings, closer to the beach. I enjoyed walking around, sometimes following the trails and sometimes just wandering off between the bushes and climbing up the dunes.

There are not many places in the Netherlands where you can find this kind of peace and quiet, where you can (almost) not hear cars or airplanes, so this place is quite a treasure.
I am not sure about the dogs, but I will sure do so this summer, with my girl and picnic basket…
