Fadiouth, the Shell Island

Fadiouth is a very strange village built on a shell island. Even the houses are made with shells. It's a very quiet and picturesque place to visit in Sénégal.

Joal-Fadiouth is made of 2 villages. Joal lies on the mainland, while Fadiouth, linked to the mainland by a bridge, lies on an island of clam shells, which are also used in local architecture and crafts. The village has no motorized transport: you need to cross the bridge by feet to get there.

The small, narrow, shell covered roads and the houses constructed with cement adorned with shells contribute to the relaxed and friendly atmosphere of the island. Whereas Senegal is mainly a Muslim country, Joal Fadiouth has a large Christian population.

We visited the village on Sunday, walked in the narrow Streets, had a look at the Church, and then visited the cemetery, but this is another story.

Great shots. Thanks for sharing this with us. Small villages in the middle of nowhere almost always make for interesting shots!
