If you think you know cathedrals, think again.
There are two cathedrals in Liverpool: one is Anglican, the other is Roman Catholic (also known as Metropolitan cathedral). However, the most spectacular one is the first one, the Anglican cathedral – its official name is the Cathedral Church of Christ, and is located in the city centre.
It was designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott and built from 1904 to 1978.
Although it doesn’t look that big from the outside, everything is huge in this cathedral – bigger than you can imagine, trust me. According to the Cathedral’s official website, the bell tower is the largest and one of the tallest in the world, rising to a height of 100.6 metres. It houses the highest and heaviest (67 meters, 31 tons) ringing peal of church bells in the world!
There are two pipe organs there. The Grand Organ, with 10268 pipes, is the largest in the UK and probably the largest operational organ in the world.
Some statistics:
• Length of the Cathedral 188.67 metres
• Area: 9687.4 square metres
• Height of Tower: 100.8 metres
• Choir Vault: 35.3 metres
• Nave Vault: 36.5 metres
• Under Tower Vault: 53.3 metres
• Tower Arches: 32.6 metres
The cathedral is open daily from 8:00 to 18:00. Admission is free. If you want to visit the tower, there’s a small fee but I strongly recommend that you do it because the view is astonishing, as you can see in some of my pictures!
