Russia in the Venice of the North

The colourful church known as Church on Split Blood seems to be the only building in St. Petersburg which looks like the Russian stereotype. The rest of the historic city is dominated by the baroque, classicism and historic styles.

When I first got to know this beautiful building apparently some language problems caused a misunderstanding. The tour guide called it “Church on Spilt Blood” but I could not find it in my guide book. Well, the solution – obviously this church has indeed different names: “Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood” a.k.a. “Church on Spilt Blood” a.k.a. “Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ”, which is its official name.

In the late 19th century, Tsar Alexander II was assassinated on the place, where the church was built later. That’s why it has got these cruel “nick names”.

The Church on Spilt Blood is situated next to one of St. Petersburg’s numerous canals. This one crosses the Nevskiy Prospekt, the “main street” of this huge city. You can’t miss it when you get off the Metro at the station “Nevskiy Prospekt”.
By the way, I timed it when I entered the metro station and dove into the deep earth by escalator. The St. Petersburg people spend approximately 2 minutes and 13 seconds on the escalator – one way! You can do the maths on your own in order to know how much time they waste during their whole lives.

During Russian Revolution and after the Second World War the building was used as warehouse. How could they! I was blown away by all these colours and paintings on the inner facade. But I really like this building because of all these onion shaped forms and towers. This is how I imagined Russia would look like. I know, I am superficial ;-)
