Le Parc De la Villette

The biggest and most modern park in Paris. A very nice place to be, alone, with friends, or family, because you can do whatever you like according to your mood of the moment, and that has no price.

Le Parc de la Villette, located in the 19th arrondissement of Paris, is one of the largest park in the french capital, built on the sites of ancient major slaughterhouses. It covers 55 hectares (including 33 of green spaces, ) from the Porte de la Villette in the north to the Porte De Pantin in the south. It is today the biggest park in Paris, the “prototype of the urban park of XXI century”. At the edge of the city and the suburbs, it blends nature and architecture, mixing recreational areas, meadows, sculptures, places of exhibitions, performances, circus, and even in summer an outdoor theatre. In this park is also the famous Cite Des Sciences De la Villette and la Geode, a round hemispheric giant theatre for Imax and special 3D movies.

Designed by architect Bernard Tschumi, Le Parc De la Villette offers to all citizens in search of oxygen a huge area to explore on foot or bicycle, according to a multitude of scenarios … An invitation to relax or play, to dream or discovery. No doors, no walls, no fence in those hectares of greenery open to all desires, for all kind of public.

Crossed by the channel Ourcq, the park is strongly influenced by the presence of water: fountains, ponds, waterfalls … Two galleries were designed for the hurried visitor: one crosses the park from Porte De Pantin to porte de la Villette, the second, elevated, goes alongside the south bank of the canal. Contemporary version of the « gloriettes » of the XVIII century, 26 “folies” dispatched at intervals of 120m across the park encourage the visitor to leave the road. These various amazing red shape structures – some purely decorative, others paying their part in various activities – have become the architectural signature of the Park, together with some peculiar modern sculptures.

Like a filmstrip thrown at random, a blue paved walk serpentine’s through the 10 theme gardens, amongst them three playgrounds for children. In the heart of the park, the big meadows called the Prairie Du Cercle ans Prairie Du Triangle, broad and flat like great green beaches, invite to play, relax or have fun. Finally, at dusk, lighting illuminates magically.
