Umhlanga Beachfront in Durban, South Africa may be part of a slightly sleepy coastal town, but there's lots of opportunities snap some luscious lomographs...
Umhlanga (Zulu for “place of reeds”) is a suburb of Durban, on the East Coast of South Africa. Formed in 1972, it boasts a landmark lighthouse, and eclectic combination of luxury and low-key hotels. It’s a kitschy, beachside vacation, dripping soft-serve kind of place, and a favourite holiday destination for South Africans. During the stinking hot summer months, the locals congregate here to catch some sun, providing some great lomo moments. There are also plenty of opportunities to get great coastal panoramas, and shots of the lighthouse and surfers while you’re there. The narrow beach and somewhat looming holiday condos mean that the best light is in the morning, before the shadows encroach too far. This being said, you can often get spectacular sunset shots, and the light and shadow can give leave you with some groovy silhouettes.
It’s free to use the beach, and there’s plenty of parking to be found in Umhlanga itself, with most roads eventually leading down to the shore. Durban’s climate means that the beach is mostly pleasant all year round, with the busiest season over the end of year holidays.
