Roskilde University, or RU, is located in Trekroner just outside Roskilde. Founded in 1972, the dominant architectural feature of RU is a great, big concrete box. For years and years Trekroner Station consisted of a train platform letting out onto a big, muddy field in the middle of which RU could be found, but in the last couple of years a new neighborhood has germinated.
RU is surrounded by student accommodation, most of it brand new and very expensive, and thus empty. To one side is a big artificial lake with swans, ducks and lots of seagulls, beyond the lake are fields of wheat and rape seed, grazing cattle and horses.
