Paracas is a small city but it has a lot to offer around. I went on a trip to the Islas Ballestas to see the sea lions and visited the Reserva National de Paracas.
Staying in Paracas may not be an emotion for it self but there is a lot you can do around this small fishermen’s touristic city. Besides the dune sliding and other kind of adventure sports, you can visit the Ballestas’ islands. These islands in the Pacific Ocean have a great abundance of wild life because of the Humboldt’s current (and therefore, lot’s of guano!). They are home to the humboldt penguin, sea lions, different types of birds, starfish… While sailing to the islands, it is possible to see the “candelabro”, a construction similar to the Nazca lines. Tourists are not allowed to disembark in the islands so they don’t disturb the animals!
A trip to the natural reserve, Reserva National de Paracas is also good, specially if you like desert meets ocean landscapes like I do! The rock formations in the coastline are stunning. “La Catedral” (the cathedral) is one of the most famous formation but it collapsed after the 2007 earthquake that ravaged the coast. You can still see the damages in many parts of the reserve. Also there is a beautiful red sand beach. It is possible to see the flamingos that inspired the national flag but since you can’t get close to them, it’s cool to have binoculars.
