La Mole Antonelliana / Museo Nazionale del Cinema

The place to visit when you come to Torino.

The ‘Mole Antonelliana’ is the most famous building in Torino. With its 167,5 meters high, it’s also the highest masonry work in this north Italian town and in Europe. The construction began in 1863, and it was supposed to be a 47 meters high synagogue. The architect – Alessandro Antonelli – decided to change a lot of things during the construction that were putting the deadline off and were increasing the cost. The Hebrew community didn’t like it at all and stopped everything in 1869.

In exchange of a new place to build a new synagogue in 1873, the city recovered the building site to finish (with the same architect) the ‘Mole’. After 30 years of quasi inactivity, a short installation of the Risorgimento Museum and the construction of an additional skeleton made with reinforced cement, the National Museum of Cinema took place in the ‘Mole’. If you visit Torino you have to visit this museum. There’s a great collection that recount the history of cinema. This place is also an incredible panoramic viewpoint on Torino, … if you’re not too sensitive.

To enjoy the view you’ll have to take a panoramic elevator that brings you through the ‘Mole’ which is empty in its centre. A 70 meters high ascent with nothing around the elevator but its steel wire ropes… After this almost 1 minute, nerve-racking journey you can admire the 360° view on the city. There’s no point in staying for hours up there, even if the view is beautiful. You’ll have to go down one day or another… with the same elevator.
