Jerónimos Monastery is located in Belém, a really wellknown place in Lisbon. The idea of building a great monastery at the entrance was of the king D. Manuel I, in 1496. Works started in 1501 and approximately one century later they were finished. This building can be considered one of the most prominent monuments in Lisbon and is certainly one of the most successful achievements of the Manueline style (Portuguese late-Gothic). It is considered a UNESCO world heritage.
It is located in a nice place to visit, in Belém there are some other important places to visit near of the monastery, as the Belém Tower, Padrão dos Descobrimentos and is where the president house is located. Two other great things to visit is the CCB, the museum of modern art that has a great collection there and some nice temporary exhibitions and Pastéis de Bélem that is one of the most well know shop/factory/pastery of the “cake” called Pastel de Bélem. It’s impossible to visit Lisbon without trying that pastery , they are really good because they are always warm an are made moments before you buy it. So visiting the Jerónimos Monastery can be an opportunity to know other different things as well.
