Royal/T is a fun, eclectic, and exciting place that I will definitely spend a lot more time at. Café/Shop/Art Space - Hello KItty Art Exhibit.
Located on a desolate, industrial stretch of Washington Boulevard in Culver City is a beautiful, unique, and endlessly fascinating café/bar/art space called Royal/T. Inspired by the maid cafes of Tokyo, Japan, Royal/T is an open, eclectic and fun way to spend an evening. Celebrating the underground cosplay (costume play) culture of Japan, the waitresses are beautiful Asian girls dressed in French Maid, and Gothic and Lolita costumes. They serve beer, snacks, and High Tea. They also have a VIP room for private parties. Admission is free.
I visited twice during the Hello Kitty 35th Anniversary Exhibit called “Three Apples,” curated by JapanLA. The exhibit spaces were stuffed with Hello Kitty memorabilia: toys, guitars, dolls, clothes, one-of-a-kind designer jewelry, and Hello Kitty-inspired custom artwork. My second visit was on Halloween, and the waitresses were in even more exotic costumes and some of the exhibits were in costume, too!
The crowd is fun and vibrant and many of the guests dress in costume when they visit as well. I can’t think of a more beautiful place to grab a beer and people watch.
