Japanese Garden in Van Nuys

Japanese Garden is an Oasis at the Heart of LA's San Fernando Valley. From lotus ponds to golden gingkos to snowy egrets to watery reflections, this unexpected treasure is a delight for all seasons.

The Japanese Garden is the public face of a water reclamation plant. It features a lake with islands, a variety of bridges, a tea house, a waterfall, stone lanterns and a dry garden. A viewing platform allows a view of the reclamation plant that makes the beauty of the Japanese Garden possible.

Dedicated in 1984, the Japanese Garden in Van Nuys is the public face of the Tillman Water Reclamation Plant. the plant recycles water for the Japaense Garden and the Lake Balboa Recreation Area. It is located nearly where the 101 and the 405 freeways cross.

The Japanese Garden itself features a lake with pine-studded islands. Snowy cranes and other water birds soak up the sun on their shores. Overlooking the lake are a teagarden and a teahouse. Visitors can watch a waterfall spill down a hill into the lake from an arbor.

Bridges arched, zigzagging, stone and wood connect various fingers of land. Weeping willows dangle branches into the reflections on the water. Bamboo poles hold the branches of pine trees in formal geometry. A Zen temple dry garden introduces visitors to the garden. Stone lanterns dot the wandering paths.

This is truly a garden for all seasons. Wisteria blossoms drape from the viewing arbor on the Plover Bird Path in the spring and summer. A stand of gingkos shower the lawns with golden fans in the fall.
