Places have many faces. See how I discovered two faces of Malate in Manila, the city I love to hate.

Born and raised in Manila at a time before the big malls came about. When I was young I used to hear stories of this place called Malate. In movies I understood Malate as THE red light district of Manila. At the time of Mayor Alfredo Lim, the dirty harry of Philippine Politics, Malate dropped this name. And the street walkers that used to roam the dark crannies of this district were replaced by young people, drinking, partying in street bars.

After some time, Malate lost its luster, with the coming of newer entertainment centers like malls, big malls and centralized gimik places like Eastwood.

Recently, I went back to Malate to rekindle its past. I went drinking with some friends in CocoMoon. Now this is the Malate that I used to go to in my younger days. A few days later, I also went into another shooting rampage at the Malate Church. We heard mass to pray for a loved one who recently passed away.

After mass, and after this roll. I was amazed how the story of Malate can be seen in each frame. Here you have the Divine and the Temporal mixing together. I remember a story of a priest from the church who used to hear confessions from the street walkers in the days gone by.

This roll reminded me that there are plenty of stories to go around. And like any other places, Malate would have her stories to tell.
