Watseka, Illinois - Summer Road Trip 2009 - Lomostop #14

Some parts of Wateska remind me of what I imagine to be an “All-American Pleasantville”. An imaginary town, in my imaginary imagination…or is it? I’m not sure if it’s the above average number of American flags and other versions of the stars and stripes proudly flown at so many private residences, or the consistently cropped grass on every lawn and boulevard, or the ride-on rockets in the 1950s era remnant of the playground at Legion Park. Whatever it is, I love Watseka. I do suspect, however, that my love for Watseka has less to do with the surroundings than it does with the people we visit there. This is where my lovely wife’s mother grew up, and the 3 times that I have been here, it has been to visit the grandparents, aunts, uncles, and many cousins, with whom we get-along smashingly well. To me, Watseka will always mean extended family meals, cooling off in the pool, impromptu pseudo-baseball games, and other random activities. It’s a hard place to leave, and we always look forward to our next visit.

Who doesn’t want road tripping? If my speculation if correct, every youth had experience this. Yet, an oniomaniac has nothing to do with vegetables, or at least doesn't usually. An oniomaniac doesn't crave French Onion Soup, but rather has a compulsive disorder in which they want to buy a lot of stuff (usually useless but aesthetically pleasing or part of current trends – see also designer shoes, and this utterly stupid obsession with cellular phones) and it leads to harm. It's cutely dressed up as "shopaholic" but that's a load of malarkey. Anyone THAT fulfilled by buying shoes or a phone has problems – and besides, you buy new ones anyway and a bunch of suits are getting rich off people's ILLNESS – that isn't cute. An <a rev="vote for" title="Oniomaniac | Compulsive Need to Buy Things" href="http://personalmoney(…)t;</a> has a disease that leads to loan lenders, misery, and debt.
