Ted Drewes Frozen Custard, St. Louis - Summer Road Trip 2009 - Lomostop #11

I heard about Ted Drewes Frozen Custard from a colleague who had gone to school in St. Louis several years ago. It sounded like my kind of treat. I learned that frozen custard is like ice cream, but it contains eggs and is quite a lot heavier than soft serve. At Ted’s, the special treat is called a ‘concrete’. This is quite a suitable name I discovered when I felt how heavy the container was.

There are apparently a couple of Ted Drewes locations in St. Louis, but the one we stopped at was in a little bit rougher/less touristy part of the city – and it clearly has been here for quite a while. This other-era stand has been in the middle of a parking lot on the corner of South Grand Boulevard and Kingsland Court for more than 70 years. The faded lettering of the menu on the wall is evidence of the stand’s long history; it has been aging gracefully, for decades. One of the neat characteristics of this little building is the built-in water fountain just around the corner, with little “Ted Drewes” water cups for washing down the concretes.

While I was standing on the hot asphalt trying not to get liquid custard in my mustache, a man walked up and asked me to take his picture with the Frozen Custard stand in the background. When I finished, I asked him if he was from out of town. He said “Yes! I’m from Canada!” I said, “Me too!”

I read on the menu that the Dutchman, a concrete with chocolate, butterscotch, and pecans, was apparently one of Ted’s favorites…now it’s one of mine too.

Note: there’s no public restrooms at Ted Drewes (or anywhere nearby) so find one before you get here if that’s gonna be a problem…

Hey again! Ted Drewe's custard is really really good. A little while ago our whole school got free bowls of it during lunch. Soo sweet
