Dolcedo, a Charming Ligurian Village - Italy -
written by azurblue on October 27th, 2009 , 5 comments (4 votes)

The valley enjoys ancient renown as a source of one of the best olive oils in the whole of Liguria; the picturesque town centre features the old Loggia del Commune and two remarkable church buildings, one of which used to serve as a refuge against Saracen attacks (Saracen tower).

The Church of St. Tommaso Apostolo is of the first half of the 17th century. It was built on top of the ruins of a previous late medieval church that still has a 1450 black stone portal and a prestigious blank and white churchyard.

The village, which has preserved its medieval charm until today, spreads up into the sloping hills with narrow alleys, archways and nested clusters of houses.

The deep river Prino is spanned by the town’s landmark, the Maltese bridge built in 1292, called “il ponte grande”, which has virtually become an icon of Liguria. Shopping possible in several grocery shops, two restaurants, a bar and a post office.

In the summer, classical music events are held on the pristine, enclosed piazza in front of the baroque San Tommaso church.

How to go there:

Exit at Imperia Ovest (Highway A10 Genoa Ventimiglia) . From Porto Maurizio at the fork in the road for Valle di Caramagna, take the road for Valle del Torrente Prino.

Hooo... You choose such nice spots during your trips... Another gorgeous gallery (2 and 12 are my favourite)... Si j'avais une deuxième vie, j'irais partout où t'es allée. Comme un pèlerinage 8-)
