Country Club Plaza, Kansas City, Missouri - Summer Road Trip 2009 - Lomostop #9
written by dirklancer on October 24th, 2009 , 2 comments (1 vote)

By now you know my story: July 2009, 8000 km road trip, 3 generations, 1 van. 10 cameras., 40 rolls of film, 10 American states, 3 Canadian provinces. And I wished that I could have stopped to take a picture of every fountain I saw…

By the early afternoon of Day 4, this trip was really starting to feel like a Mid-Western USA sampler platter.

When a work colleague told me about a place in Kansas City called Country Club Plaza that has had the longest life of any planned shopping center in the history of the world, it was immediately placed on my “places-to-stop-for-about-two-hours-even-though-we-don’t-really-have-the-time” list. It was worth it, and once again we found a place that we wished we could have stayed longer.

Country Club Plaza is an upscale shopping district with 5 fountain courtyards – no surprise in the “City of Fountains”. The 5 fountains are named Pomona, Penguin, Mermaid, Chandler, and Neptune, and I must say, the sculpture in the Pomona fountain is quite attractive…blush. The whole area is VERY pedestrian friendly and full of sculptures and cool architecture.

The Mermaid courtyard was quite lively with impromptu dancing couples, entertained by live band and a couple of FREE HUGS & KISSES guys.

The Chandler courtyard is where we heard a busker singing about how cheap the people are that are walking by and not giving him money. I laughed out loud. He laughed back.

Since this was the first shopping plaza in history designed for those arriving by car, it probably shouldn’t have been so surprising to discover plenty of FREE parking all over the place.

And a few blocks away I did a drive by shooting of the World’s Largest Shuttlecocks, just for you.

I am a Kansas Citian myself, and I must say that you have captured the soul of our city in your photographs quite nicely
