Cebu is actually the oldest place in the Philippines. Just right after the Spaniards settled in, Cebu became a prominent place for foreigners and Filipinos alike. Like a mirror, Colon is the oldest street in the whole Philippines. The Spaniards built Colon Street during the reign of Miguel Lopez de Legaspi. It was literally named after Cristobal Colon or Christopher Columbus in English. It is the heart of downtown Cebu, a glittering area by night lined with movie houses, restaurants, department stores, and other business establishments and some local sellers.

Colon is known as the bargain center for Cebuanos. Currently, it rises in Cebu as one of the center for bargain lovers who love to hunt down old, vintage stuffs. Not to mention cameras and film! I have seen a lot of photo labs there. Even went to a camera shop and asked some bargain cameras (they were disposing SLR’s as cheap as 3,000 Pesos).

Christmas is also a great time for Colon. It fills the street with some dazzling lights you’ll never regret visiting this one for Christmas!

So if ever you get yourself down the Queen City of South, be sure to visit Colon Street. It’s a rough place but patience can always be your virtue.
