Kites are indeed culturally rooted among the general Balinese community and especially in Sanur. The Sanur Village Kite Festival had previously been held 4 years ago and for me it’s the first time.
This time the event will be carried out in 2 stages, namely an exhibition and kites event. The exhibition invites kite experts from various kiting clubs in Indonesia and 12 countries around the world by exhibiting their kites n the air for 6 days and the height of the event will be the judging of the flying kites on August 12-17 August 2009.
The kites carries unique traditional Balinese essence, with it’s giant shapes and sizes. It is believed that before taking the kite to the air, a ritual ceremony to take place to ensure the kite can freely fly high in the sky. Some of the kites that you will see on my galler above are the “Janggan,Sanur Bebean,Pecukan” and kites of modern creation.
Honestly, I got a sunburn while shooting those beautiful kites. ;p
But it’s so cool to see many kites flying high on the beach. Definitely a Lomo moment for me. LOMO ON!!
