Ephesus, the Best Preserved Antic city of Anatolia, Turkey

Ephesus is the best preserved classical city of Eastern Mediterranean, ans among the best places in the world enabling to genuinely soak in the atmosphere of Roman times

Ephesus (Efes) is situated on the west coast of Anatolia, near present-day Selçuk, Izmir Province, Turkey.

The city was famed for the Temple of Artemis, one of the seven wonders of the Ancient World. It is nowadays almost entirely ruined: only one inconspicuous column and fragments of the frieze remains.

It’s better to begin the visit by the top of the site (south entrance) and to walk along the main street.
During the summer, the visit is exhausting, because there’s no shade and it’s very hot (don’t forget to take water and a cap).
The site is very famous and overcrowded, too, but it is worth the visit.

The most impressive monument is the one called the Library of Celsus, whose façade has been carefully reconstructed from all the original pieces.
It was built by Gaius Julius Aquila in Memory of his father and once held nearly 12,000 scrolls.

Thank you for your kind comments !

Ephese is surely nicer in spring, without all the tourists. It's the most visited antic site of Turkey.
I have a regret : I haven't seen the houses and their paintings.
