The Space Needle

The 1962 World’s Fair saw the rise of the Space Needle, an observation tower in the middle of Seattle Center, minutes from Downtown. It is 605 feet tall (about 184 meters) and has 25 lightning rods to prevent damage during thunderstorms.
There’s an observation room at the very top of the tower, as well as a restaurant that rotates to give you a full view of Puget Sound. Beware of long lines, though; tourists are given time slots as to when they can go up the tower when they buy tickets.
Interestingly the Needle is one of a few pieces of architecture called Googie, a very futurist and Space Age-influenced style emphasizing soft lines and a very pop sensibility that was popular in the late 50’s and early 60’s. Googie or not, the Space Needle is a really neat thing to see, apart from the television screen whenever it’s in the background for Frasier, Grey’s Anatomy, or Sleepless in Seattle. Touristy or not, the Space Needle is a sight to see.
