Singapore may not have Gaudi or Gehry, but we've managed to hang on to some of our heritage architecture.
A stroll down Katong and Joo Chiat on the East of Singapore reveals heirloom shops keeping traditions alive while others get a new lease of life! I’ve always liked wandering around Katong because it has an abundance of good food. The local staples like Chicken Rice, Katong Laksa and Straits Chinese delicacies are aplenty on this stretch. While the food is flavorful, the traditional shop houses that have managed to hang on to their charms are equally colorful.
Shop houses generally have gorgeous high ceilings and those who have kept their traditional air well in the centre of the house, has abundant sunlight shining through. The only downside? The stairs are generally narrow and steep !
