A Bit of a Different Museum
written by scorpie on September 16th, 2009 , 8 comments (3 votes)

Museum Insel Hombroich is an open air museum. The park itself is quite impressive, there’s wild meadows and ponds, woods, grassland and neatly arranged patches. The pathways leading through the park will guide you to the pavilions – mostly huge modern brick-houses – inside of which you’ll find a huge variety of modern European (or generally western) art alongside sculptures by the Khmer and sculptures, art and furniture from ancient China.

But keep your eyes open outside, too, there’s an endless number of little and big sculptures hidden in all the green, some are quite obvious, others you might only recognize upon a second look. Most of these are by the artist Anatol, who lives and works on the museum grounds. You can also visit him in his studio, it’s almost right in the middle and hard to miss.

You’re not allowed to bring your own food and drinks, but that doens’t matter because you can get as much food and drinks as you want at the cafeteria for free (you can leave a little donation if you want).

Other advice: Go there on a sunny day and bring sturdy shoes!
