Montargil is located in Portalegre in the northern Alentejo region, Portugal. It was founded in 1315 by King D. Dinis but there are some remaining of the Bronze Age (3000-200 BC) and from the year 800 during the Iberian Peninsula occupation. In 1958 a dam was build. Montargil has recently become a popular centre for outdoor activities such as water and extreme sports.

Montargil Park is a very beautiful and peaceful place; it is great to spend time with friends and have fun. The food is great and the wine even better. It is also very hot, and you can easily get 40ºC temperatures during the day and 30ºC at night; Too hot? Maybe a bit, but you can always enjoy the hot water in the river or the hot water in the pool inside the park.

I use to stay at bungalows, wooden houses painted in red and white facing the amazing landscape of the river. The bungalows have all conditions you need, AC (you need it to sleep at night), heating (for the winter), TV, refrigerator, kitchen and a great wood porch. You can also stay at mobile homes or tents, the park has lots of shades and you won’t feel uncomfortable with the hot sun.

The park is completely surrounded by nature there is nothing nearby; you have to drive some Kilometers to find a village.
I advise every one to try the traditional Alentejo gastronomy and wine; you can easily find a good restaurant in any village nearby.

I like to meet a different village every time I go to Montargil; the traditional architecture is amazing, small traditional houses painted in white with stripes of blue and yellow, roman bridges magnificent churches and monasteries from the 13th to 18th century.

It is also a great place for water sports; you can take a boat or jet sky and have fun, you can skydive (there are two air strips nearby), you can do bungee jumping in the dam, canoeing and many more activities.
